Latest iteration of LUGO at Remai Modern invites immersion

SASKATOON — On Saturday, January 12, Remai Modern invites people to experience LUGO Deep, presented by Nutrien, the museum’s biggest party of the year. With an engaging and unconventional new lineup of artists and performers, this year’s LUGO is focused on the themes of encounters, curiosity, immersion and impact.
Hundreds of partygoers will take part in the massive celebration and fundraiser for Remai Modern. Now in its ninth year, LUGO has established itself as the city’s premiere cultural event where contemporary art meets live music, film, poetry, and dance in new ways each year.
“LUGO is unlike anything else you can experience in Saskatoon. The event animates the museum in unexpected ways, offering the chance to explore new spaces and artforms in an evening of discovery that happens only once,” said Gregory Burke, Executive Director & CEO of Remai Modern. “It’s an invitation to dive in and make meaningful connections with Remai Modern and the arts community.”
The 2018 event, which was attended by more than 1,000 people, builds on LUGO’s inaugural year in the new museum. This year, the Connect Gallery will feature a project by Saskatoon-born, Montreal-based artist Marites Carino. HANDSHACK is an interactive installation where two strangers get to know each other through touch. The handshake, an accepted first form of physical contact, is twisted into unexpected choreography. Wearing headphones, volunteer participants are guided to interact. A video stream lets LUGO guests watch the connection.
Art and performance is programmed throughout the museum’s three main levels. The SaskTel Theatre will play host to a lighting score designed by Stephen Wade and sound performances by Chad Munson, Darren Miller, Ursa, Open Window and Ancient Greens. Meanwhile, Rodney LaTourelle’s sculpture Leaves, part of the Mendel Art Gallery Collection at Remai Modern, will provide a unique hangout spot on Level 3. The museum’s digital screens will feature a project by the Indigenous Poets Society and moving image works by local artists.
The Riverview Room features the music talents of The Gaff, Open Window, Chunder Buffet and Man Meat. Participating restaurants include Shift, Congress/Hometown, Una/Bar Gusto, Sticks & Stones/Little Grouse, Drift, Calories, The Hollows, The Night Oven and Picaro.
LUGO is programmed by Troy Gronsdahl, Associate Curator (Live Programs).
Additional information:
• The coat check has been moved to the Persephone Theatre lobby. Regular ticket holders can enter through the Persephone Theatre doors and travel into Remai Modern through the link between the two buildings. Premium ticket holders enter through the regular Remai Modern entrance.
• The Cameco Learning Studio will play host to two interactive artmaking activities.
• For those wishing to dress on theme, organizers suggest blues, circles and waves.
• During the event, the website golugo.ca will be the central hub for information about lineup, schedule and other details.
