Remai Modern’s annual art party and fundraiser turns 10

For immediate release — January 10, 2020

Saskatoon, Canada — LUGO, the long-running celebration and fundraiser, returns on January 11 for its 10th anniversary. The popular event, which originated at Remai Modern’s predecessor the Mendel Art Gallery, has raised more than $400,000 for art programs in its history.

This year, the museum presents LUGO Love, a theme that embraces the potential of love as a positive force for creative expression and social change. All three levels of Remai Modern will be animated by a diverse lineup of performances and installations.

“LUGO is a testament to the impact of art, both in its ability to raise funds that benefit people in our community and as a one-of-a-kind event for Saskatoon,” said Lynn McMaster, Remai Modern’s Interim Executive Director & CEO. “LUGO is a rare chance to experience the museum setting in a totally new way, open your mind to new artistic ideas and see work by a fantastic and wide-ranging array of local and Canadian artists.”

The LUGO Love lineup includes music, dance, photography, poetry, drag, artmaking, food & drink and so much more.

LEVEL 1

The museum’s Connect Gallery on the ground floor will play host to the Love Pavilion, a space where LUGO guests will be treated to a full slate of compelling and provocative performances, from dance to drag to poetry and more.

In the Cameco Learning Studio, ticket holders have the chance to explore their own creativity, with activities generously supported by Art Placement. Using a live model, guests are invited to compete against fellow LUGO Love attendees in a figure drawing challenge, which take place every hour from 9:30 PM to 12:30 AM. There is also an opportunity for drop-in figure drawing between challenges and enjoy a glass of wine.

LEVEL 2

The SaskTel Theatre features performances by Toronto-based, Saskatoon-born artist and sound practitioner Kiko Sounds. Visitors are invited to take part in a deep listening experience that the artist calls a sound bath. Take a break from the frenetic energy of the rest of LUGO for these special, 20-minute performances.

The mainstage in the Riverview Room will be the place to see an eclectic mix of local music acts including Alex Bent + the Emptiness, Aurora Wolfe, Toria Summerfield and Raeburn.

Level 2 also showcases a work by artist Steven Beckly, a Toronto artist who also appeared in the summer 2019 Remai Modern exhibition if I have a body. His piece Love S.O.S., which will be projected in the museum, is a slideshow of almost 400 photographs. These images form a spectrum of interactions shaped by the artist’s desire for connection with his surrounding world.

LEVEL 3

The Level 3 action is centred around LUGO’s beloved photo booth. Featuring design by Lindsey Rewuski (the creative voice behind some of LUGO’s iconic photo booth from previous years) and photography by Ania Slusarczyk, guests are invited to make memories in a set up that perfectly suits the theme of love.

FOOD & DRINK

Thematic food offerings from some of Saskatoon’s leading restaurants will be spread throughout the museum during the event. This year’s participating restaurants are Ayden Kitchen and Bar, Calories, Congress Beer Hall/Hometown Diner, Dylan and Cam’s, Drift, Hearth, The Hollows/Primal, Night Oven, Odla, Picaro and Shift.

Shelter Brewing Company will also be serving an exclusive, limited-edition cinnamon heart sour beer just for LUGO. Two specialty cocktails, made with LB Distillers products, will be served by Shift and The Hollows.

Tickets for LUGO Love are available at remaimodern.org/lugo, by calling 306.975.8900 or visiting the museum’s admissions desk. General tickets cost $40 and premium tickets—which come with perks including food/drink tickets, a premium ticket holder experience, a complimentary cocktail, a tax receipt and more—cost $90.

LUGO Love takes place at Remai Modern on January 11 from 8 PM-2 AM.
