Sustained Artist Mentorship Program
Remai Modern is seeking new applicants for a program that supports local artists working in the realm of performance and public practice. The program will engage up to three artists for a one-year period.
Successful applicants will receive financial supports, access to museum resources and professional development opportunities. The museum will work in collaboration with each artist to develop a program that includes research, public engagement such as artist talks or workshops, and the development and presentation of new work or work in progress. The program requires some group participation with other program artists, guest contributors and museum staff.
Participating artists will receive a fee of $12,000 payable in three instalments. The museum also pays fees for public engagements as appropriate. In addition, artists will receive a Remai Modern membership, access to staff insight and expertise and mentorship opportunities with visiting artists, cultural workers and other community leaders.
Eligibility
Professional artists working in the intersections of performance art, movement, somatic practice, dance and socially engaged practice are welcome to apply. An interest and experience working in a museum context is essential. The program is available to artists living in Saskatoon and the immediate vicinity. Full time residency is required.
Program eligibility aligns with SK Arts criteria. To be considered a professional artist, an applicant must meet at least three of the following criteria in a manner appropriate to their art form. The museum recognizes that artistic practice may be defined differently depending on the cultures or communities an artist identifies with and across artistic disciplines.
- The applicant has received training and/or acquired knowledge and experience in a manner typical for their art form.
- The applicant has begun creating a body of work since the conclusion of that training and demonstrates a commitment to devoting more time to artistic activity.
- The applicant may be in the early stages of their career or exploring new artistic directions.
- The applicant is involved in their creative community and is recognized as professional by others working in the same art form.
- The applicant has some experience in public presentation and has received compensation for their artistic work at a level consistent with those of other professionals working in the same art form.
Applications will be evaluated by an internal committee. The selection process is guided by Remai Modern values and strategic objectives and all artists will be considered regardless of age, culture, ethnicity, gender identity or physical ability.

2024-2025 Sustained Artist Mentorship Program
In June 2024, Remai Modern launched the third iteration of the Sustained Artist Mentorship Program, supported by RBC. The program assists local artists working in performance and public practice. The 2024–25 participants—Gabby DaSilva, Xiao Han and Luke Maddaford—collaborated with the museum over a year to develop new work, conduct research, and engage the public through talks and workshops. The selected artists received financial support, professional development, access to Remai Modern’s resources, and mentorship opportunities.
In her project, DaSilva explored the relationship between memory and care. Han bridged cultural experiences, music, and community storytelling. And Maddaford examined regional histories and Queer identities. You can read more about each project on Gabby DaSilva, Xiao Han and Luke Maddaford.
