Les Misérables, Ladj Ly
Inspired by the 2005 riots in Paris, Stéphane, a recent transplant to the impoverished suburb of Montfermeil, joins the local anti-crime squad. Working alongside his unscrupulous colleagues Chris and Gwada, Stéphane struggles to maintain order amidst the mounting tensions between local gangs. When an arrest turns unexpectedly violent, the three officers must reckon with the aftermath and keep the neighbourhood from spiralling out of control.

The Friday screening of Les Misérables will open with the short film Pendulum by Manuel Mathieu.
Manuel Mathieu is a multi-disciplinary artist, working with painting, ceramics, film and installation. Mathieu’s interests are partially informed from his upbringing in Haiti – just after the fall of the Duvalier dictatorship – and his experience emigrating to Montréal at the age of 19. His art investigates themes of historical violence, erasure, resilience and cultural approaches to physicality, nature and spiritual legacy.

This February, Cinema at the Museum presents a series of films in honour of Black History Month. This series presents work from Black filmmakers that speak to inequality, activism, capitalism, identity, power, gender, discrimination, and love.
Film tickets are $10 at the front desk; free admission for members and youth under 18. Seating is first come, first served.
