Cinema at the Museum: The Vengeance Trilogy
This May, Cinema at the Museum presents a series of films in honour of Asian Heritage Month. These films look at themes of identity, revenge, family, independence, memory, grief, culture, and community from a wide range of Asian filmmakers.
Join us for The Vengeance Trilogy by director Park Chan-wook, a South Korean thematically-linked film trilogy comprising of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002), Oldboy (2003) and Lady Vengeance (2005). Each film deals with the themes of revenge, ethics, violence and salvation.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance:
This is the story of Ryu, a deaf man, and his sister, who requires a kidney transplant. Ryu’s boss, Park, has just laid him off, and in order to afford the transplant, Ryu and his girlfriend develop a plan to kidnap Park’s daughter. Things go horribly wrong, and the situation spirals rapidly into a cycle of violence and revenge.
Oldboy:
With no clue how he came to be imprisoned, drugged and tortured for 15 years, Oh Dae-Su a desperate businessman, seeks revenge on his captors.
Lady Vengeance:
After being wrongfully convicted, a woman is imprisoned for 13 years and forced to give up her daughter. While in prison she gains the respect of her cellmates and plots her revenge on the man responsible. Once released, she begins her elaborate plan of retribution, but discovers a horrifying truth.
Each film is presented in Korean with English subtitles
