World ◎ View
World ◎ View brings together artists from Remai Modern’s collection who have captivated audiences with mythology, legend, and spirit life. These artworks convey self-expression and cultural identity through printmaking.
This exhibition draws from Remai Modern’s collection of prints and drawings by renowned artists living in the northern-most region of Canada and selections from the museum’s suite of Picasso prints.
World ◎ View highlights prints from Kinngait Studio, the longest-running print studio in Canada. Contemporary artists Shuvinai Ashoona and Annie Pootoogook began their careers at Kinngait and are celebrated for their coloured pencil and ink depictions that build on centuries of graphic traditions in the north. Artists Pitseolak Ashoona and Pitaloosie Saila depict the every day in the north; scenes from hunting, kayak-building, and leisure are woven into stories that frequently feature humour or mythology. The ability to produce multiples in printmaking allowed artists in the far north to share their work with audiences in the south, popularizing works from the 1960s and 70s and building a lasting legacy in printing that continues today.
